5 Misconceptions About Electrical Contractors Set Straight

B Town Electric • March 24, 2021

When it comes to electrical work around your property, it’s highly recommended that you hire professionals to work on them instead of taking the DIY route. However, not all of the things you know about electricians are true, which is why in this post, we’ll set the record straight. Here are some common misconceptions about electricians you need to know about:

  1. You Don’t Need to Be an Electrician to Do Minor Home Rewiring

Definitely not true. It’s very unsafe for you to rewire or even touch wires if you lack experience and knowledge in it. To become an electrician, you need to undergo an industry-recognized qualification during an apprenticeship for 2-4 years. Also, the apprentice will have a block release at college with course work and a final exam at the end to qualify.

With that, a trainee, before they become an electrician, will be exposed to a lot of jobs that make them experienced in the field.

Someone who knows a bit about electrical wiring can do more harm. Remember, it is the training and the variety of jobs that make electricians experienced. A qualified electrician must perform any rewiring to prevent fires and overloading.

  2. You Only Need to Hope for the Best

The OSHA 10-hour safety course helps workers know about on-the-job hazards. Although this isn’t mandatory in all states, this 10-hour program is an effective way to foster workplace safety culture.

During the program, workers learn how to avoid electrical, chemical, and mechanical dangers. With that, electricians don’t just cross their fingers and hope it doesn’t blow up. Once again, they undergo certifications and training to make less room for errors.

  3. They Don’t Turn Up When They Say They Will

For some electricians, this is true. However, not all electricians are like this. You can still find many electricians that honor your time and really do turn up when they say they will.

  4. They Don’t Finish on Time

Not all jobs can hit deadlines because of the complexity of the work or problems that come up. Electricians don’t do it “on purpose,” though, because they want to complete the job as soon as possible. Technology within households continues to increase, which makes electrical work even more complex than ever. That’s why there are times when electrical jobs take longer than planned.

  5. They Charge What They Want

Not true. Regulated electrical contractors offer a fair and honest quote before they start work. Should any issues arise during the job, additional charges may apply, and this will be made clear to you before you work with them. Therefore, it’s recommended you get at least three quotes for the work to help you find the best price and the right contractor.

Conclusion

Now that you know the common misconceptions about electricians, you can make a more informed decision when you need one. Always look for regulated and qualified electrical contractors to guarantee the best services and results you need. Electrical work can get so complex, which is why you need to ensure you have the best people working on it.
